Area Law Enforcement
Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then located many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state early analysis suggest the liquid was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have asked to the residents for information.
A high-ranking political figure stated the vandalism made him without words and had to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
